Summary:
Be kind. But do not feel badly about protecting
yourself and the people you care about from dangerous
situations
by asserting yourself, tactfully and firmly.
Author's statement:
There are many guidelines that emphasize the importance of being
kind. Being friendly and open to new people is wonderful. But
use common sense when you find yourself in threatening
situations. It is ok to change seats if the person sitting next
to you on the bus is really bothering you, or to hang up the
phone on unwanted calls. It is the right thing to do to not
volunteer information you consider private, and to call the
police if someone is threatening your safety.
Being prejudiced and close minded is bad. But being sensible
protects you and your loved ones and is the right thing to do.
