Smack in the heart of Griffith Park is an animal attraction that never fails to enthrall its 1.5 million annual visitors. From toddling tots to tenacious teens to grandparents, everyone finds an animal to love at the 113-acre zoological garden. Small wonder -- it's home to 1,200 exotic inhabitants. The list of animals has grown steadily since the park opened in 1966, and continues to grow even today. The latest expansions are the $11 million Children's Discovery Center and the Pachyderm Forest, which simulate a rainforest riverbank. These attractions are scheduled to open in 2004-2005.

The Big Thrills:
Primates' numerous friends and fans should visit both Red Ape Rain Forest and Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountain. For sheer grace and aesthetic value, the stunning Himalayan snow leopards are peerless, though the tigers and other big cats are spectacular also. Bird shows (dark Tuesday) and Sea Lion Feedings always draw big crowds. The park recently became an accredited Botanical Garden, too.

Admission Info:
Tickets are $9 for adults, $6 for seniors (62 and older), $4 for children under 12, and free for children under 2. Become a zoo member for special events and offers.

Tips & Hints:
Pack a lunch, and when you're ready for a break, visit Play Park at the top of the zoo. Little ones can burn off energy in the playground and wading pool while parents relax at a picnic table.
