Summary: Cats use their claws for everything from grooming to fighting to marking their territory, declawing them is unnecessary and leaves them without their primary means of protection.

Author's statement:

Even if your cat is an “inside only” cat, there is no need to
declaw him/her.  Cats can easily be trained to stay off and 
not scratch furniture. Inside-only cats have been known to 
escape, and once outside a declawed cat is at a major 
disadvantage.
